Breadboarding Basics

What I've Learned
  1. What is a Breadboard?

A breadboard is a device that allows you to connect electronic components and create circuits without soldering. It is a plastic board with lots of tiny holes that allow easy insertion and removal of parts. Usually will come in three sizes: full, half, and mini.

  1. Terminology
  • Leads- the long metal legs on electronic components.
  • Pins- like leads, but shorter.
  • Buses/Rails- the long strips on the sides of breadboards. They are used to supply power to the circuit.
  • Jumper Wires- wires used to make connections on breadboards. Always try to use solid core, NOT stranded wires.

  1. How to Use (Build a Circuit)
POSITIVE NEGATIVE
NAME Power Ground
MARKING Plus Sign (+) Minus Sign (-)
WIRE COLOUR Red Blue or Black

Tips:

  • Use a breadboard diagram to help learn where to place components.
  • Connect components first, and the power supply last.

  1. Common Mistakes
  • Mixing up the Power and Ground.
  • Not pushing leads in all the way.
  • Putting components that have polarity in the wrong way.
  • Getting row numbers wrong.
